Welcome to the Foundation for Mood Disorders.org!
We are a not for profit research organization that provides education and awareness about mood disorders such as bipolar illness, major depression, ADHD, anxiety, psychosis, etc.
Our current research project is a large scale, retroactive chart review of of over 13,000 patients with bipolar and unipolar depression on lithium and other psychotropic medications that were collected over the past 40 years in clinics at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University Medical Center, and the previous Foundation for Depression and Manic Depression. We currently have a large computer database with many different variables so that statistical analysis can be done in many areas of interest with countless comparisons.
Currently we are focusing on the neuroprotective properties of lithium. In our early analysis comparing incidence of cerebrovascular disease, myocardial infarction, seizures, stroke and brain tumors amongst patients treated with lithium versus those treated without, we have found that there is a decreased incidence of all of these illnesses in our lithium treated patients, which is consistent with the findings of major in vitro and in vivo studies being performed by the NIMH and other laboratories around the world.
